89th Academy Awards: Nominations & Predictions

2017’s Academy Awards is set to be an exciting one, with quite a lot of controversy surrounding who will take Best Actor and also Best Picture, as well as significant amount of excitement about how Jimmy Kimmel will go hosting the night of nights for the first time.

Below is the complete 89th Academy Awards nominations list, coupled with our Oscars experts’ picks (in bold) for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress & Best Cinematography.

(Our expert would like to make mention of the fact that she has gotten 5/7 and 10/11 correct when predicting over the last two years. Just sayin’.)

If you’re in Australia and are wanting to watch the Oscars live, you’ll need to tune into Channel Nine at 12:30 pm AEDT on Monday, February 27th. If you, like most normal people, will be snoozing then, there will be a repeat in the evening at 7:40 pm on 9GEM.

And now; On with the show!

Best Picture

Arrival
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell Or High Water
Hidden Figures
La La Land
Lion
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight*
*Our Expert Says: Moonlight was one of the most visually stunning and emotionally affecting films I’ve seen in years, but at this stage it feels like the film we all want to win, but likely won’t (for a variety of deeply frustrating reasons).

Casey Affleck- Manchester By The Sea*
Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling – La La Land
Viggo Mortensen – Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington – Fences

*Our Expert Says: This decision was difficult. I’ll stick with Denzel Washington even though I know there’s every chance that Casey could (likely will) win instead. Frankly, I was captivated by Denzel’s complicated character from the outset and that didn’t cease until the credits. Also, the amount of effort that went into preparation was outstanding! The traits, the nuances, the sheer mass of lines to learn! It was fantastic. If not for this role alone, he also deserves an award for all prior powerful roles.
