How To Learn To Surf In Melbourne & Torquay

I have a confession to make.

I didn’t know how to surf.

I know, I know, a real modern-day Australian tragedy. Surfing is something I’ve always wanted to learn how to do, but before I knew it I was 30 and still didn’t know how to surf. I thought about doing surf lessons but was strangely embarrassed about the thought of doing them. All I could imagine was getting paired with some ridiculously good looking buff bronzed beach babe and me making a fool of myself in front of him. I’m not joking. I had the scenario imagined to a tee in my head.

I’m a confident person, and it pissed me off that I couldn’t work up the courage to go and get a bloody lesson and learn to surf! And primarily because of some imaginary hot surfer dude who did everything in glorious, dripping slow motion… But I digress.

I’ve passed up a lot of opportunities in my travels because of my complete lack of confidence to learn to surf. But last time I was visiting Melbourne, a good friend of mine was telling me a story about the previous group of people she took out for surf lessons.

This whole time, I didn’t know she ran a bloody company that taught surfing, and on top of that, specialised in teaching chicks to surf. I felt like an absolute moron (and bad friend to boot!) for not realising this. So I booked in to go along on her next surf tour, which was happening mere days before I had to go back to Canada.

I had the best experience and had finally ticked ‘learn to surf’ off my bucket list. Seriously, best decision I made in a long time. And if you’re keen on biting the bullet and want to learn to surf near Melbourne too, then I can’t recommend Jane from Coastline Adventures more. I’m a tad biased because she’s a mate, but even if she was a complete stranger, you know immediately she’s a fantastic teacher. And as a bonus, she’s hilarious so you’ll won’t have a chance to realise how sore your arms get.

There are a few options when it comes Coastline Adventures learn to surf packages, depending on whether you have wheels to get to Torquay or not. If you don’t have transport, then Coastline Adventures should be your go-to mob for surf lessons, because they’re one of the only companies near Melbourne that offer full-service surf lessons with transport.

Since my first lesson with Coastline Adventures, I’ve been surfing in Hawaii and Malta, and can’t wait to keep surfing in Australia. That first lesson was all I needed to properly realise how amazing surfing is, and to get over the fear of embarrassing myself and getting out on the water. If you’re in Melbourne, hit up Coastline Adventures ASAP and snag a spot on their next learn to surf tour. You won’t regret it.
